Noninvasive measurement of intracranial pressure: Is it possible?

2007

BACKGROUND: Some publications suggest a strong correlation between the intracranial pressure and the intraocular pressure. Other studies claim no correlation between these two physiologic variables. Our aim was to study whether the tonometry could be a useful method to evaluate intracranial pressure in patients with suspected intracranial abnormality. METHODS: We evaluated the correlation between the intracranial pressure and the intraocular pressure, the intracranial pressure and the mean arterial pressure, and the intraocular pressure and the mean arterial pressure in 22 patients, initially comatose, who were admitted to our hospital. All patients required the intracranial pressure monito…

Associations between intracranial pressure, intraocular pressure and mean arterial pressure in patients with traumatic and non-traumatic brain injuri…

2008

Introduction: Anatomical proximity of the eye and the intracranial space is a fact but the existence of physiological and pathophysiological relationships between them is elusive. The objective of this study was to explore anatomical and pathophysiological interactions between the eye and the intracranial space and to assess clinical utility of intraocular pressure measurement in estimation of intracranial pressure in patients with brain injuries and to discover how haemodynamic instability could influence these interactions. Controversy surrounds the recent literature concerning this problem and the consensus has not been achieved. Materials and methods: We evaluated the correlation betwee…

Intracranial pressure monitoring in patients with acute brain injury in the intensive care unit (SYNAPSE-ICU): an international, prospective observat…

2021

Background: The indications for intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring in patients with acute brain injury and the effects of ICP on patients’ outcomes are uncertain. The aims of this study were to describe current ICP monitoring practises for patients with acute brain injury at centres around the world and to assess variations in indications for ICP monitoring and interventions, and their association with long-term patient outcomes. Methods: We did a prospective, observational cohort study at 146 intensive care units (ICUs) in 42 countries. We assessed for eligibility all patients aged 18 years or older who were admitted to the ICU with either acute brain injury due to primary haemorrhagic…

First clinical results with a new telemetric intracranial pressure-monitoring system.

2011

Background The knowledge of intracranial pressure (ICP) is the basis of an appropriate neurosurgical treatment. Because clinical, fundoscopic, or radiological data alone are often elusive, a pre- or postoperative long-term monitoring of the ICP itself is desirable. Objective We describe the first clinical experiences with a new telemetric ICP-monitoring device. Methods The transducer of this telemetric intraparenchymal pressure probe is placed under the galea over the calvaria. ICP can be monitored via a special telemetric reader, placed over the intact skin, and the ICP values are stored in a small portable computer. The system does not require an intensive care environment and can be used…
